News from the Star for the students- come on guys take part....

Greetings of joy, dear teachers,

All too quickly, we're almost at the end of the school year. And we have exciting news to share.
Could you please help us identify students among your teenage flock who have a flair and passion for writing in English? And encourage them to e-mail in a zesty 500-word description of themselves to starstruck2012.star@gmail.com (More details here: www.facebook.com/stuffatschool?sk=app_206206989417003).

Time is of the essence. The closing date is December 11.

Stuff@school, The Star's pullout that goes out to schools on Mondays will be expanded to 12 pages for 2012. It has a year-long young journalists programme called Starstruck! that appoints teen writers to write features, school news and highlight teacher and student views. What fun! Your school can be in the limelight!

The chosen ones will be appointed as Stuff@school ambassadors and they'll even earn pocket money from their published articles.

Starstruck! applicants have to:

  • be between Form Two and Upper Six in 2012
  • have strong writing skills
  • have access to the Internet
We're especially looking out for Starstruck! writers from Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak. Because of the reach of the Stuff@school pullout this year and our active Facebook page, entries from the more "active" states like Penang and Selangor have already flooded in.
We publish views and comments taken from our Facebook fan page .. so teachers, if you have a Facebook account, we're rolling out the red carpet for you. Do "like" our page at www.facebook.com/stuffatschool and join the happening online community. We'd love to publish diverse views from teachers around the nation!

2012 will be the second year the Starstruck! programme will run.

Among this year's pool of Starstruck! writers, 24 of the top writers aged between 14 and 19 from Penang, Kedah, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Johor, Pahang, Selangor, KL and Sarawak have qualified for either a one-month internship at Menara Star in Petaling Jaya while the lower secondary writers will attend a four-day videojournalism workshop in Pahang.

Stuff@school:
- is a platform to explore, express and enjoy the English language
- is a must-have for wannabe writers and avid readers
- includes features and articles written by teens for teens
- gives the opportunity to be part of our online community
- includes English literature components
- offers an interactive corner for written submissions and views

Personal coaching- optimizing the students' time

Shu Fen, a girl from 4E has shown her effort to attend school today (14th November 2011). I have to substitute her subject teacher at that time, the teacher is to invigilate SPM examination at other school.
There are only 3 students (as I was told by her) attend school including her. To appreciate Shu Fen's patient and determination to stay in classroom (as the other two was missing-play truant) Teacher Mohd Asri has conducted a personal English reading coaching using 'ladybird keywords' books.
There, the teacher found that she has difficulties in pronunciation and vocabulary. But I appreciate her most and I could see that anybody can learn only if she/he has the effort, patient and ready to obey teacher's instructions.

Shu Fen able to read 3 books that morning.

Opinion and comment are welcome to what other teacher(s) did/ will do if he/she found/finds only a few turned/turns up in classroom? Comment down here
