Reading text on Dr Martin Luther King Jr for the planning reading lesson plan

Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.

One of the most well-known leaders in the world was Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Born on 15 January 1929 in Atlanta, the United States of America, he was a key personality in the civil rights movement in America.
While he was still a student, Dr King became interested in Mahatma Gandhi’s idea of non-violent resistance. In 1959, he went to India to meet followers of Gandhi. He then became certain that non-violent resistance was the best way to fight for freedom.
Dr King brought about a lot of changes to the lives of the black people in America and abroad. His speeches gave people new hope and his words gave them confidence. His dream was to bring about equality for all people.
Dr King was awarded several degrees from numerous colleges and universities in the United States and other countries. He also received several awards for his leadership in the Civil Rights Movement. Among them was the Nobel Peace Prize which he received in 1964. At the age of 35, Dr King was the youngest man, the second American and the third black man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
On April 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, dr King was shot in the neck by James Earl Ray. Dr King had gone there to lead a protest against low wages and the terrible working conditions faced by sanitation workers.
At the time of his assassination, Dr King was on a nationwide campaign to help the poor. He was only 39 when he died. Millions of people mourned his death.
